Dance lessons are given every Wednesday night from 7-7:45 p.m. in the back half of the hall at the YWCA, taught by Jim and Lennie Laux and a variety of guest instructors. You do not need to bring a partner in order to take the lessons. The lessons are free with admission to our weekly dances and designed to provide basic instruction in East Coast Swing for beginners, as well as form and technique pointers for more experienced dancers. East Coast Swing is the foundation for what is called Bop in the South, Shag in the East, Imperial Swing in the St. Louis area, and Jitterbug in the North. Each month, two levels of Basic lessons are given on consecutive weeks, followed by one to three weeks of Intermediate dance instruction or special dance classes. Here is the schedule for each month:
If you want to learn to dance, you are encouraged to attend the first dance lesson of the month and follow through with the rest of the lessons. Basic II will build on the instruction given in the first lesson. Prior attendance at the Basic lessons is encouraged before you take an Intermediate lesson. You are welcome to repeat the Basic lessons as many times as you wish (and you'll learn something you missed before).
